If you were one of the zillion people following the 2024 Olympics in Paris this past summer – or if you opened any form of social media – you know that Simone Biles absolutely earned the title of GOAT after just killing it in gymnastics. Four years ago, Biles made the news when she pulled out of the team competition at the 2020 Olympics in Tokyo, stating that she needed to prioritize her mental health over the needs of the team. And you know what? Good for her! Because mental health has become a critical aspect of our overall well-being, and it’s just as important as taking care of our bodies… and yet a lot of people struggle to find effective ways to manage anxiety and stress.

This is where many of us have found our magical practice can offer valuable support. If we take the time to integrate integrate mindfulness, ritual, and develop a deep connection to nature, we might just be able to help our own mental clarity and emotional balance. Now, that having been said, I am NOT saying spirituality is a substitute for professional mental health care when you need it – but it can be complementary. If you are in a place where you find that your magical practice still isn’t enough, get help from a trained therapist, counselor, or other professional. There’s absolutely no shame in reaching out for assistance in times of trouble.

Meditation

For some of us, meditation is a foundational part of our practice, although I’ll be the first to admit it took me years to learn how to meditate without falling asleep. In witchcraft, meditation can be used as a tool focus and clear our minds of clutter, attune to the natural energies that surround us, and prepare for ritual or spellwork. Practices like grounding and centering can help us stay connected to the present moment and maintain emotional balance. During the summer of 2020, when the world fell apart and we were all in lockdown, I developed an anxiety disorder that manifested itself in panic attacks. It was terrifying – I thought I was well adjusted until I wasn’t – but I got help. In addition to that professional help, I worked on learning coping techniques, and for me, going back to my meditation practice was a big part of that.

Journaling and Self Reflection

I’m a huge fan of self-reflection and personal growth. I’ve found that for me, writing things down helps a lot. By documenting emotions, thoughts, and experiences, we can gain valuable insights into our inner thoughts. It helps us to track patterns and recognize our own triggers, as well as celebrating our progress, which can all be of benefit to us mentally, emotionally, and spiritually. mental health. Writing down your spells, rituals, and overall ideas also creates a timeline of growth and transformation, and encourages mindfulness and self-awareness. Once you start doing that, it’s much easier to process feelings and nurture our emotional well-being in a way that honors who we are, and who we wish to be.

Connecting with Nature

There’s a sense of peace and grounding I get when I’m outside, whether I’m on a hike, working in my garden, walking in a park, or even just playing tennis ball fetch with my dog. Being outside allows us to immerse ourselves in the rhythms of the natural world and can keep us grounded – it’s a nice respite from the stresses of everyday life. Often, when I’m outdoors, I leave my phone behind so I’m not distracted by texts, emails, or social media. Gardening – one of my favorite things to do – can be a magical act of creation and growth. Outdoor rituals, like honoring the elements or celebrating the changing seasons, deepen our appreciation for the world we inhabit, and remind us of where we fit in the grand scheme of things.

Practical Magic for Mental Well-Being

  • Protection spells can help create a safe mental space by shielding you from negative energies and influences. They work by setting boundaries, which allow you to focus on your well-being without external distractions. I’m a big fan of boundaries, because they’re how we train other people to treat us. Try a simple protection spell by lighting a white candle and visualizing a protective bubble around yourself, carrying a piece of black tourmaline, or wearing a protective amulet to serve as a daily shield against negativity.
  • Cleansing rituals come in handy for mental clarity, because they can help remove stagnant or negative energies. Regular cleansing can refresh your energy and create a sense of renewal and focus. Burn sacred purification herbs, take a salt bath, or use sound cleansing with bells or singing bowls to cleanse your space.
  • Boost your self-esteem and confidence with spells focusing on self-love and empowerment. Try creating a self-love jar by filling a small container with rose petals, amethyst, and a written affirmation of your worth, or incorporate positive affirmations into your daily routine. Learn to speak words of kindness and encouragement to yourself in front of a mirror – it’s perfectly healthy to look at yourself and say You are AMAZING!

Balancing Witchcraft with Professional Help

While witchcraft offers many tools that can help support mental and emotional wellness, I cannot stress enough that professional help is invaluable when dealing with deeper mental health challenges. Therapists and counselors provide expert guidance and support that can be life-changing – and in some cases, life-saving. Magical spirituality can be combined with the insights of professional mental health support if you need it. Remember, seeking help is a brave and powerful step. Taking care of your mental health is something all of us are entitled to prioritize, and don’t make anyone ever feel like you’re Less Than just because you’re focusing on you. Self-care isn’t selfish, it’s transformative and healing – and I hope you know that if you’re going through a rough patch, I want you to be okay.
